Early Pianos
The 1887 Pleyel Grand Piano is exactly what you’d hope a piano made in Gay Paree in the run-up to the Naughty Nineties might be. Its straight-strung bass and beautifully-wound copper strings give a free, unforced sound that perfectly complements its staggering decorative marquetry.
Norris has broadcast late Brahms piano music on this instrument. He will accompany Amanda Pitt on it in programmes of late-nineteenth century song, especially the music of Gabriel Fauré and Claude Debussy, for which it is ideal.
April 8th 2006, Stamford Music Club.
